Lipid peroxidation in Workers exposed to Toluene

Abstract
To investigate if urinary malondialdehyde (MDA) could be marker of biological activity resulting from exposure to toluene in workers, we measured MDA as HPLC based thiobarbituric acid tests in 58 toluene exposed workers and 42 nonexposed workers (age range 17-54 years) from December in 1996 to April in 1997. Study subjects were female and nonsmoker who have not current disease. The degree of toluene exposure was assessed by concentration of urinary hippuric acid, a marker of toluene exposure. The urinary malondialdehyde concentration in exposed group (n=58, urinary hippuric acid 0.96¡¾0.5 g/l) was 6.16¡¾2.7 ¥ìmol/l and that of nonexposed group (n=42, urinary hippuric acid 0.33¡¾0.2 g/l) was 4.74¡¾2.0 ¥ìmol/l (p<0.05). the correlation coefficient of urinary malondialdehyde with urinary hippuric acid was 0.21 (p<0.05). These results suggest that the exposure to toluene may be to enhance lipid peroxidation in the whole body and thus increase urinary excretion of malondialdehyde.
